Selenium is a metal found in natural deposits as ores and is a probable human carcinogen. The chief commercial uses for selenium today are glassmaking and pigments. Although trace amounts of selenium are necessary for cellular function in many animals, including humans, both elemental selenium and (especially) selenium salts are toxic in even small doses, causing selenosis. Signs and symptoms of selenosis include a garlic odor on the breath, gastrointestinal disorders, hair loss, sloughing of nails, fatigue, irritability, and neurological damage. Extreme cases of selenosis can exhibit cirrhosis of the liver, pulmonary edema, or death.
Treatment Methods Activated alumina adsorption, Strong base anion, Distillation and Reverse osmosis filtration systems.
